Discover secrets of Bondi

BONDI'S newest activity for visitors, an 80-minute walking tour designed to illustrate the area's culture and history, is off to a sound start. Walk This Way, an initiative of Georgia Douglas, is designed to show and tell visitors to this vibrant area much more than they might discover on a casual visit to the beach.

Ms Douglas is a long term resident who has had extensive experience is the hospitality, leisure and fashion industries.

Ms Douglas said she developed Walk This Way because she felt that many visitors to Bondi were unaware of its fascinating history and the many amusing and dramatic events that had taken place, from the foundation of the Bondi Icebergs, to Black Sunday and the Bikini Wars. The tour pauses at key points overlooking the beach, while Ms Douglas explains, in a lively style and with appropriate illustrations, the key incidents and developments that have made Bondi what it is today.

"I wanted to share my enthusiasm for the place with some of the thousands of people who come here," she said.

"I felt that a small group walking tour was the best way of doing that."

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

New Zealand visitors Warren and Shirley Orr of New Plymouth said that they had heard a lot about Bondi, including many of the jokes about New Zealanders there, but were much better informed after taking the tour. “We learned a lot of very interesting and often amusing facts”,
said Ms Orr.

Judy Morley, from Stratford in Canada, said that she was delighted with the experience. “It made my visit to Sydney so much more enjoyable”, she said. “Canadians really know very little about this part of the world.”

Walter Stockhoff, from the Netherlands, on his second visit to Australia, agreed. “We have similar history and culture walks in Europe”, he said. “So I was very interested to join one here. It was very well thought out and presented.”

WALK THIS WAY operates on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at 11am and 2pm.
